UNO offers a concentration in conducting in both choral and instrumental music. Students gain hands-on conducting experience with a variety of ensembles and in different musical styles, guided by experienced faculty. In addition to applied study, students also take courses in music history and music theory as well as electives.

The University of New Orleans Department of Music includes several choral and instrumental ensembles, and hosts the New Orleans Civic Symphony, New Orleans Concert Band, New Orleans Children's Choir, and other public groups. New Orleans is home to a burgeoning number of professional groups, ranging from the venerable Louisiana Philharmonic to upstart chamber ensembles; all providing opportunities for students to experience a wide range of musical presentations and engage in a robust creative community.

Applicants enrolled in the final year of a bachelor's degree or international equivalent will be considered for conditional admission. Minimum GPA Requirements: 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all undergraduate coursework, 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all graduate coursework. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Internet-based test score of 79 total or Computer-based test score of 550; The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.5; PTE (Pearson Tests of English) Academic score of 58; IELP Intensive English Language Program: Satisfactory completion of the Intensive English Language Program at UNO; Minimum Scores on IELP Test: Listening Comprehension: 70; Grammar/Reading/Vocabulary: 63; Writing/Composition: 75.
