The Master of Arts in Teaching Degree (M.A.T.) is a Graduate Alternate Certification Program intended to allow individuals who have completed a non-education bachelor’s degree to earn a master’s degree and initial teaching certificate. If you already hold a teaching certificate you are not eligible for the MAT program. If you already hold a teacher certification, please explore the M.Ed. Program instead of the MAT Program.

Certification Areas

• PK-3: Complete degree in Elementary Education and pass Praxis 5621 (Principles of Learning and Teaching)
• 1 - 5: Elementary Education
• 6 - 12: Secondary Education (English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, Physics, and Social Studies)
• General Special Education Mild/Moderate: An Integrated to Merged Approach Grades 1-5
• General Special Education Mild/Moderate: An Integrated to Merged Approach Grades 6-12 (English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, General Science, Physics, and Social Studies)
• Special Education – Early Intervention Birth-5

Degree Requirements

The program of study is designed to move students toward certification in their areas of expertise. Upon acceptance, each candidate is assigned a major professor to assist in designing an appropriate program of study. The MAT includes a minimum requirement of 36 credit hours. Each candidate is required to complete at least one semester of student teaching or internship.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students must have the following: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a 4-year degree equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad. Applicants enrolled in the final year of a bachelor's degree or international equivalent will be considered for conditional admission. Minimum GPA Requirements: 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all undergraduate coursework, 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all graduate coursework. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Internet-based test score of 79 total or Computer-based test score of 550; The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.5; PTE (Pearson Tests of English) Academic score of 58; IELP Intensive English Language Program: Satisfactory completion of the Intensive English Language Program at UNO; Minimum Scores on IELP Test: Listening Comprehension: 70; Grammar/Reading/Vocabulary: 63; Writing/Composition: 75.
