专业概况

在这里学什么？

The Department offers graduate studies leading to the Master of Arts in English with concentrations in American Literature, British Literature, and Professional Writing, all of which prepare students for careers in teaching, writing, and a wide variety of professional fields or further graduate study leading to the doctorate. Students must complete 33 hours of graduate coursework, three of which may be thesis work. Late afternoon and evening courses are available, and the program can be completed either on-campus in New Orleans or entirely online.

Careers

The Master of Arts program is sufficiently flexible to accommodate a range of academic interests and to help prepare students for several different career paths. Our graduates have gone on to choose one of four options: to pursue the doctoral degree; to teach in secondary schools, junior colleges, colleges, and universities; to undertake further professional training, such as in law or library science; or to work as professional or technical writers.

Concentrations

The Master of Arts program features advanced study in British and American literature, as well as professional writing and editing. The program requires students to complete one of three areas of concentration.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students must have the following: Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution in the U.S. or a 4-year degree equivalent from a recognized institution of higher learning abroad. Applicants enrolled in the final year of a bachelor's degree or international equivalent will be considered for conditional admission. Minimum GPA Requirements: 2.5 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all undergraduate coursework, 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4-point scale for all graduate coursework. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Internet-based test score of 79 total or Computer-based test score of 550; The International English Language Testing System (IELTS): Overall band score of 6.5; PTE (Pearson Tests of English) Academic score of 58; IELP Intensive English Language Program: Satisfactory completion of the Intensive English Language Program at UNO; Minimum Scores on IELP Test: Listening Comprehension: 70; Grammar/Reading/Vocabulary: 63; Writing/Composition: 75.
