专业概况

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, with over 300 million speakers in Latin America, Spain, and the U.S. This diverse faculty is dedicated to excellence in scholarship, teaching, and community outreach. A wide range of interests reflects the program's diversity in purpose and desire to satisfy a variety of student needs and career goals.

Applied Learning Requirement:

To satisfy the applied-learning requirement for foreign language, a student must complete 3 credit hours of internship, directed individual study, practicum, honors, service learning or study abroad (at the intermediate level or above).

Oral Communication Requirement:

To satisfy the oral communication requirement for the B.A. degree in Spanish a student must successfully complete SPN 303.

Requirements for a Major in Spanish for the B.A. Degree:

36 hours (12 must be SPN 303, SPN 305, SPN 306, and SPN 307; 6 must be at the 400 level, and up to 6 may be at the 200 level.) Only 3 hours at the 400 level may be obtained by means of SPN 491 or SPN 498.

Spanish Program Student Learning Outcomes

Students will:

• SLO 1: Develop listening proficiency in Spanish; specifically, to sustain understanding of connected discourse on a variety of topics pertaining to different times and places.

• SLO 2: Develop speaking proficiency in Spanish; specifically, to handle successfully most uncomplicated communicative tasks and social situations. To converse with a number of strategies, such as simple narration and/or description, appropriate to a range of circumstances and topics.

• SLO 3: Develop reading proficiency in Spanish. Specifically, to read texts that include descriptions and narrations such as short stories, news items, bibliographical information, social notices, personal correspondence, business letters, and simple technical material. Also, to conduct research in Spanish.

• SLO 4: Develop writing proficiency in Spanish. Specifically, to take notes, write correspondence, cohesive summaries, narratives, descriptions of a factual nature, and analytical essays.

• SLO 5: Develop competency in Hispanic culture. Specifically, to demonstrate an understanding of the products, practices, and perspectives of Hispanic culture, including the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through a knowledge of Spanish. Also, to be able to function effectively in Hispanic cultural and social environments.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher on a U.S. 4.0 scale to be considered for admission. Students must have completed the high school. English Proficiency: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - minimum score of 71 on the Internet-based exam. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) - minimum score of 6.0 on the academic module. Duolingo English Test (DET) - minimum score of 54, Pearson PTE - minimum score 54.
