The Department of Physics awards a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Physics which provides students with a high quality, broadly-based education. Physicists are typically employed in high-tech, research and development positions in industry, government laboratories or education. For more information on careers in Physics, check out the American Physical Society's website for career pages for physics students and those interested in career opportunities with a physics degree. There are nine hours of science or engineering electives plus 19 additional free electives which gives students the flexibility to choose a minor or to tailor their education to their career choice.

Student Learning Outcomes

College of Sciences Bachelor of Science in Physics

Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fundamental principles of physics including classical and quantum mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and thermodynamics.

Demonstrate the ability to apply fundamental principles of physics in a variety of advanced topics such as condensed matter, materials science, signals analysis, optics, and computational physics.

Demonstrate an ability to work effectively in a research environment, including the use of instrumentation and computer, experimental design, and analysis of results.

Develop problem-solving skills using mathematical and computational tools as applied to the solution of physical problems.

Collaborate effectively and productively in teams for research and applications of physics.

Effectively communicate physics in both written and oral form.
