Overview

This specialized program provides you with training in the practice of art therapy, which combines art and counselling within a clinical, therapeutic or community context. Art therapy is used for the treatment and healing of developmental, emotional and psychological problems or disorders. It is also used as a wellbeing intervention for groups and communities experiencing distress.

Career outcomes

Graduates are qualified to practise as art therapists in clinical settings including hospitals, community health programs and rehabilitation services. Graduates can also find work in education and psychiatric settings and in aged care, palliative and forensic centres. You'll help people with varied healthcare needs including those dealing with substance abuse, eating disorders and in rehabilitation.

Professional recognition

The Master of Art Therapy is approved by the Australian, New Zealand and Asian Creative Arts Therapies Association (ANZACATA).

Graduates of the Master of Art Therapy may apply for professional membership with ANZACATA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; TOEFL Paper-based Test - Overall score of 575 with 5 or better in TWE (Test of Written English); TOEFL Internet based (iBT): Overall 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing, Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): Overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component.
