La Trobe’s Juris Doctor is for students that hold a bachelor degree and are looking to start a career in law. It is also for those who seek to gain the qualifications to practice law in Australia.
La Trobe's Juris Doctor delivers the academic requirements you need to apply for admission to practice Law in Victoria. The course also gives you the necessary foundations to practice law internationally (providing you meet the specific accreditation requirements of the host country).

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Career outcomes dependent on the completion of additional requirements set by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board (VLAB).
Professional recognition
All Bachelor of Laws and Juris Doctor law courses include the subjects required by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board to qualify for admission to the legal profession in Victoria as an Australian lawyer. To qualify requires ongoing training and/or courses. International graduates require a relevant visa to complete a supervised workplace traineeship in Australia. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
Admission to the legal profession by the Supreme Court of Victoria also requires the completion of practical legal training either by a 12-month period of Supervised Legal Training or by completing an approved practical legal training course (for example, at the Leo Cussen Institute or The College of Law). Candidates for admission to practice must also satisfy the Admissions Board that they are a fit and proper person to be admitted to practice. International graduates require a relevant visa to complete a practical legal traineeship in Australia. International students are advised to obtain assurance of recognition of the course by the relevant professional bodies in their preferred country of practice.
Professional registration may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
