专业概况
在这里学什么?Veterinary Medicine is the branch of science that deals with the application of medical, surgical, public health, dental, diagnostic, and therapeutic principles to non-human animals including wildlife and domesticated animals such as livestock, working animals, and companion animals. Practitioners of Veterinary Medicine are known as Veterinarians. Veterinary science helps human health through the monitoring and control of zoonotic disease (infectious disease transmitted from non-human animals to humans.
Veterinarians must eventually obtain a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M or V.M.D) degree and a license to practice. The prerequisites for admission to veterinary programs vary from school to school with many programs not requiring a bachelor's degree for entrance. Instead they require a number of credit hours that range from 45 to 90 semester hours at the undergraduate level. However, most students admitted to Veterinary school have earned a bachelor's degree. So despite the fact that a bachelor's degree is not required, applicants without a degree are at a disadvantage.
Students are encouraged to participate in volunteer work and/or an internship in veterinary clinics, farms, zoos, wildlife parks or ranches for hands on experience in the field. Most experience is with small and large animals.
Students are encouraged to contact the Chair of the Pre-Health Professions Committee early in their junior year. The committee will review the student’s qualifications, faculty evaluations, and conduct an interview before writing a recommendation letter to the veterinary schools. Pre-veterinary students are usually required to have a 3.4 or higher GPA to be eligible for a committee recommendation letter.
