专业概况

Podiatry is a branch of medicine devoted to the study, diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the foot, ankle and lower leg. A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) is a specialist who is qualified by education and training to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg. Within the field of podiatry, practitioners can focus on many different specialty areas, including surgery, sports medicine, biomechanics, geriatrics, pediatrics, orthopedics, or primary care.

Students interested in a career in Podiatry will need to first earn at least 90 credit hours of undergraduate course work. However 95% of student accepted into Podiatry School earn Bachelor of Science degree in Biology. After completing a Bachelor degree students will attend a 4-year podiatric college program.

Most graduates of Podiatry school complete a hospital-based residency program after receiving a DPM. Residency programs last from 2 to 4 years. Residents receive advanced training in podiatric medicine and surgery and serve clinical rotations in anesthesiology, internal medicine, pathology, radiology, emergency medicine, orthopedic, and general surgery. To become a licensed Doctor of Podiatric Medicine students need to earn passing scores on national and State examinations.
