This course enables midwives and maternity nurses to develop, deliver and direct high quality midwifery services, helping the drive towards improving maternity and health outcomes for women and their families.

Overview

The course aims to enable students to develop, deliver and direct high quality midwifery services within the context of the national and international drive towards improving maternity/health outcomes for the childbearing woman and her family.

You will study in depth the art and science of midwifery, evidence informed midwifery practice, research skills and methodology and the ethical, political, legal, economic, multi-professional and global context in which contemporary midwifery is practised.

The course aims to equip midwives and maternity nurses with the knowledge and skills required to lead practice change, follow a career in research and/or higher education, or work at senior and strategic levels in today's midwifery and healthcare services. To achieve this, the Division of Midwifery offers a learning environment that facilitates the development of reflective, analytical and evidence-based critical thinking to challenge existing midwifery practice, challenge maternity service provision and lead and manage change.

The School of Health Sciences promotes opportunities for developing interprofessional working and learning with colleagues and students across all three divisions. Students on this course will study six core modules and a dissertation module.

Careers

Previous MSc Midwifery programmes have enabled individual midwives and maternity nurses from across the globe to develop their careers, for example as clinical managers, consultant midwives, university lecturers, practice development midwives, researchers, and specialist clinical midwives. Also, more and more of our students decide to continue their education by studying for a PhD in Midwifery.

This programme is aimed at midwives and maternity nurses working in the National Health Service and other maternity care systems in the EU and across the globe. As such, the content is designed to put you at the cutting edge of thinking, research and practice in the area of maternity care, with a view to accelerating your career progression and prospects.

The MSc Midwifery Studies, Maternal and Newborn Health enables midwives and maternity nurses to advance their careers and operate at senior levels be it in clinical practice, higher education, management or research, with graduates securing posts as clinical managers, consultant midwives, lecturers, practice development midwives, research midwives and specialist midwives.

This course also provides an excellent foundation for future study at PhD level. Midwives and maternity nurses will be required to attain a final degree classification of at least a merit in order to be eligible to apply for this higher level of study.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students who do not meet the entry requirements stated above and students who hold a three-year diploma (Da Zhuan) from a recognised Chinese university with good grades, may be eligible for the University’s pre-Master's Programme delivered on campus at the University of Liverpool International College. Students need to have IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
