Overview

This course is an ideal route to internationally recognized professional careers in accounting and finance, and prepares you to take the next step in your career in finance, banking and accounting.

The curriculum builds on a broad foundation of study in economics, accounting and finance, management, marketing and statistics. And equips you with the knowledge and training you need to specialize in areas such as auditing, costing, investigative accounting, taxation, financial advice, funds management, investment analytics, management consulting and more.

La Trobe's accounting and finance subjects are ranked in the Top 7 per cent in the world (QS world university rankings by subject 2015) and we’re among the top three universities in Victoria for research in accounting, auditing and accountability, banking, finance and investment (Excellence in Research for Australia, 2015). This expertise informs and enhances the content of our courses and our teaching.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognized in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Career outcomes

High level finance, accounting and banking skills are keenly sought after by employers around the world, and graduates of our program can expect to move into a diverse range of roles in accounting, banking and investment analysis.

Graduates of the program are now employed in various roles within accounting and finance at a range of Australian and global organizations including ANZ, Ernst and Young, PwC, Telstra, AMP and NAB.

Once you complete the course, you can choose to specialize in areas such as auditing, costing, investigative accounting, taxation, financial advice, funds management, investment analytics, management consulting and more.

Professional recognition

The Master of Financial Analysis/Master of Professional Accounting is accredited by CPA Australia and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). Students are required to complete specific subjects in order to graduate with the CAANZ accredited qualification, please refer to the Handbook for further details. Professional registration may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details. Graduates of the Master of Financial Analysis/Master of Professional Accounting may apply for membership with Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details. Graduates of the Master of Financial Analysis/Master of Professional Accounting may be eligible to apply for registration with the CFA Institute. English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0; TOEFL Paper-based Test - Overall score of 575 with 5 or better in TWE (Test of Written English); TOEFL Internet based (iBT): Overall 79 with 13 in Reading, 12 in Listening, 18 in Speaking and 21 in Writing, Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): Overall score of 58 with no communicative skill score less than 50, Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component, Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): 176 with no less than 169 in any component.
