The Department of World Languages and Literatures helps students communicate effectively and thrive in a global context. Our programs are multilingual, our faculty and students are multicultural, and our curriculum is international.
We offer majors in four of the most widely spoken languages in the world: Chinese, Japanese, French, and Spanish, and M.A. programs in Spanish and French. We also offer language minors in International Business, Italian, Portuguese and Latin American Studies, and a single subject teaching credential program in French, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
We offer language and culture courses in Arabic, Hebrew, Persian and Vietnamese, and classes in Greek and Latin. Our graduates work as teachers, executives, translators, interpreters, civil servants, journalists, and hold many other occupations in global business and finance.
- Language & Communication: Demonstrate Intermediate-high (ACTFL) level of Japanese linguistic knowledge and skills in writing, reading, speaking and listening in three modes of communication (interpersonal, interpretive and presentation).
- Cultural Analysis and Comparison: Analyze and compare a wide variety of texts, human relationships, social values, products, practices and perspectives of Japanese society with those of their own culture, drawing upon their cultural knowledge of Japan.
- Intercultural competence: Demonstrate ability to evaluate situations appropriately and choose appropriate expressions and communication strategies to meet their intention in intercultural settings including Japan, such as business, study abroad, homestay etc.
- Linguistic analytical competence: Demonstrate analytical competence of phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic components of contemporary Japanese language.
- Literary text, audiovisual and art appreciation and analytical competence: Demonstrate ability to appreciate and interpret Japanese literary texts, audiovisuals and arts and to recognize stylistic elements, social values and backgrounds in the literature, TV drama, films and arts.
- Translation skills: Demonstrate advanced translation skills of modern contemporary literature.
- Research: Demonstrate ability to develop and carry out research projects in Japanese language.
