Wichita State’s Master of Music degree program will help you take your musical talent and career to a higher level. The program combines professional training with acclaimed faculty and year-round performance opportunities on campus and throughout Kansas’ center of arts and culture.

The Master of Music (MM) degree, conducting concentration, is designed to accommodate a small number of students (up to four per year) who receive extensive individualized conducting preparation with the university’s resident band and orchestra conductors. Candidates have rehearsal/conducting opportunities with both large and small ensembles.

Curriculum

To complete the Master of Music degree, you’ll take a minimum of 32 credit hours, with 60 percent of your work in courses numbered 700 or above, and complete a thesis or recital depending on your concentration.

Every MM concentration requires 12 credit hours of core courses in addition to hours in your specialization area.

Applied Learning

Students in the Master of Music - conducting concentration are required to complete an applied learning or research experience to graduate from the program. The requirement can be met by a terminal conducting recital (MUSP 873) given in their second year.

A graduate degree in music - conducting from Wichita State will equip you for career success directing orchestras, choirs and bands in diverse settings from public schools and universities to churches and the recording industry.

The minimum acceptable scores for most programs are: TOEFL - 79 on the Internet-based test, or 550 on the paper-based test. IELTS - minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required. PTE Academic - 58.
