Wichita State’s Master of Music degree program will help you take your musical talent and career to a higher level. The program combines professional training with acclaimed faculty and year-round performance opportunities on campus and throughout Kansas’ center of arts and culture.

Curriculum

To complete the Master of Music degree, you’ll take a minimum of 32 credit hours, with 60 percent of your work in courses numbered 700 or above, and complete a thesis or recital depending on your concentration.

Every MM concentration requires 12 credit hours of core courses in addition to hours in your specialization area.

In addition, composition students must complete a terminal project of either a composition of major proportions or a body of works in various media.

In addition, students must complete a terminal project which must consist of the following:

• A composition of major proportions, or
• A body of works in various media.

Composition majors may be required by the thesis committee to have a work or works performed publicly. The final thesis must be notated using computer software and submitted digitally in keeping with the procedures established through the Graduate School of Wichita State University.

Applied Learning

Students in the Masters of Music in composition program are required to complete an applied learning or research experience to graduate from the program. The requirement can be met by the completion of a thesis (MUSC 876) that includes an original musical composition of substantial breadth.

Careers

Music composition graduates pursue a variety of employment opportunities, including: composition for orchestration or arranging, freelance composition, music copying or computer graphics in music, music publishing and editing, commercial music or music composition for children.

为来自中国的学生设计 Applicants for full-standing degree admission to the specialist and master’s programs typically must have: Earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or a recognized institution in another country whose requirements for the bachelor’s degree are substantially equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree. The minimum acceptable scores for most programs are: TOEFL - 79 on the Internet-based test, or 550 on the paper-based test. IELTS - minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required. PTE Academic - 58.
