A Bachelor of Science (BS) in health management from Wichita State will train you for careers in the management side of health care or careers in the planning and assessment of public- and community-health initiatives. The program combines classroom knowledge and applied learning in settings throughout Kansas’ health care hub.

The Bachelor of Science degree in health management establishes a professional degree program that prepares graduates for employment in health care, public health organizations and aging programs/services. Individuals interested in applying the social and business sciences to a career in the health care sector are well-suited for this program. Students complete a health management core curriculum that serves as the foundation and skill set basic to health services delivery, population health assessment and leadership. Additional elective courses in areas related to aging studies, clinical health care management or public health is required. A capstone seminar and health-related practicum (educational work experience) is required. Students are strongly encouraged to choose a minor to complement their career choice. Graduates go on to manage health clinics, senior living communities, quality improvement departments, infectious disease control programs or community health organizations. The BS in health management also prepares students for graduate education in health care administration, public health or aging studies.

Program Learning Objectives

  • Describe the evolution of public health and its roles and issues across local, national and global health systems.
  • Demonstrate ability to use data to promote, protect and assure improved population health outcomes and knowledge.
  • Explain the relationship between health leadership, management and policy.
  • Illustrate the importance of social, behavioral, cultural and environmental factors that impact community health.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and appraise public health ethics, stewardship, social justice and life-long learning.
  • Exhibit oral and written communication skills for diverse populations and environments.

Curriculum

Students complete a health management core curriculum that serves as the foundation to health services delivery, population health, assessment and leadership. You'll choose from one of three concentrations:

  • Aging Studies - Prepares students for a variety of entry-level positions in senior centers, senior living communities, nonprofit or for-profit aging organizations or graduate education in aging studies.
  • Public Health - Prepares students for a variety of entry-level positions in state and local health departments, health-related nonprofit and for-profit organizations or graduate education in public health.
  • Health Administration - Prepares students for a variety of entry-level positions in nonprofit and for-profit clinical health care organizations or graduate education in health administration.

Careers

A degree in health management from Wichita State will give you a broad range of health-related knowledge preparing you for a variety of graduate programs and high-paying careers in settings such as acute-care medicine, community health, long-term care and others.
