The Data Science and Artificial Intelligence MSc programme has been designed to provide students with a non-computer science first degree with the necessary technical knowledge and skills required to take up rewarding careers within the data science and artificial intelligence (AI) industry, including interdisciplinary career opportunities.
The programme will allow students to build on their existing undergraduate degrees, and upskill their portfolio of abilities, in the context of current thinking in the domain of data science and AI. More specifically the programme will provide students with a comprehensive insight into the modern data analytics landscape with a focus on data science and AI.
Why study this subject?
On completion of the programme, you will have gained a systematic insight into the current state of the art, and current thinking, within the remit of data science and artificial intelligence in particular, and computer science in general. The programme will complement your first-degree knowledge with a deep and systematic insight into the domain of data science and artificial intelligence.
During your studies, you will develop your ability to work independently, and with others, to research, design, implement and execute creative data science and artificial intelligence solutions to practical and commercial problems, and to subject your work and that of others to critical analysis and evaluation.
You will also have an opportunity to create a professional development plan and, throughout the course of the programme, build an e-portfolio that exhibits your understanding of computer science and the practical application of computer science technology.
Methods of assessment?
Assessment is exclusively through online activities carried out in the VLE, rather than examinations.?You will be assessed through a range of activities, including discussion forum participation, practical assessment and group work.
Practical assessment adopts the principle of authentic assessment where the assessment tasks to be undertaken are aligned with the kinds of task that students would be expected to undertake in a professional setting. Examples could include presentations, reports, software, system demonstrations, reviews and/or essays.
Career destinations
Data science and artificial intelligence has major application in many different sectors, including IT, healthcare, government agencies and technology. Organisations across these sectors, both commercial and non-commercial, are experiencing a significant recruitment challenge. Nearly every organisation uses data science and AI to refine and streamline business practices. Employment opportunities within the data science and AI sector far outstrip the supply of qualified data science graduates.
The Data Science and Artificial Intelligence MSc programme will address this skills gap by providing graduates with employment opportunities across the sector with a focus on, but not limited to, career opportunities within the field of data science and AI. This includes interdisciplinary opportunities by coupling knowledge of AI and data science with the knowledge that graduates have acquired from their first degree.
Job opportunities are wide and varied; examples include: Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Database Manager, Machine Learning Practitioner, and IT consultant.
