专业概况
在这里学什么?A flexible degree that allows you to develop advanced knowledge in ancient history, the visual culture of antiquity and ancient literature and languages.
Overview
MA Classics will introduce you to a range of approaches to the study of the Greek and Roman worlds, and will broaden and deepen your understanding of Classics, in the fields of Ancient History, Visual Culture of Classical Antiquity and Classical Literature. It will give you the opportunity to acquire and practise specific study skills, such as literary theory, close reading, contextual analysis, methodology and training in ancient and modern languages, historiography, visual culture of antiquity, and training opportunities in the Arts Digital Transformations Hub.
Depending on the pathway you wish to follow, the course allows you to develop advanced skills in reading Classical Literature, Ancient history and Visual Culture of the Classical Antiquity through specialised training in the core module Researching the Ancient World, expert supervision for the MA dissertation, and teaching in a selection of themed modules which change annually. Modules are interdisciplinary and will allow you to concentrate on aspects of the subject which are best-suited to your interests and experience as a student of Classics.
You will also have the option of taking a language module in Greek or Latin (at advanced, intermediate or beginners level, depending on your level of previous language study). This route through the course is strongly recommended for those considering a research degree. You may also wish to consider taking a module in another appropriate humanities discipline, such as Archaeology, English, History of Art and History. We also offer you the chance to apply for the City of Rome Postgraduate Course, a module involving a two-month residential course at the British School at Rome, whilst studying the history, archaeology, literature and visual culture of the city of Rome.
The MA in Classics course leads to a 12,000-15,000-word dissertation on your chosen research topic, which you will complete during the summer period towards the end of the course.
We welcome applicants who have a first degree in classics, classical studies, Latin, Greek or related areas (such as English, modern languages).
Careers
Postgraduates of all backgrounds are highly sought after by employers because they are able to demonstrate a stronger skills set, so this course will prepare you for a wide range of careers.
You will also be well equipped to pursue research in the field of classics, particularly relating to classical literature.
