This web-based MA provides an exciting opportunity to investigate English language in applied contexts. It sits within the Applied English programme, which enables you to specialise in Applied Linguistics while also drawing on materials from across ten different English MA courses.

Overview

The Applied English distance-learning programme allows you to develop a specialism in Applied Linguistics, without the constraints of a set curriculum. .

You will develop fluency in the key ideas and concepts in applied linguistics and receive thorough training in relevant research methods. This MA is particularly suitable if you wish to pursue a PhD programme after completion of the MA.

The principle of language study that we have established at Nottingham combines theoretical and ideological dimensions with practical applications; we aim to be rigorous and principled while offering an approach to language study that is fundamentally humane.

Course structure

The Applied English programme goes beyond traditional modules and essays. Now you can study ‘pods’, non-credit bearing segments of study, created by subject matter experts.

To graduate with this MA in Applied Linguistics you will need to take at least six pods from the list below, as well as completing a large research project or dissertation in this field. Your remaining six pods can be chosen from any of the other Applied English MAs. More pods will be added to the programme on an ongoing basis.

为来自中国的学生设计 Students who do not meet the entry requirements stated above and students who hold a three-year diploma (Da Zhuan) from a recognised Chinese university with good grades, may be eligible for the University’s pre-Master's Programme delivered on campus at the University of Liverpool International College. Students need to have IELTS 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each component.
