Become an adaptable, innovative and creative civil engineer.
La Trobe's Bachelor of Civil Engineering will help you meet the diverse challenges of civil engineering anywhere in the world. Learn the basics of electrical, mechanical and electronic engineering. Gain in-depth knowledge of geotechnical, hydraulic, transport and structural engineering. You'll be equipped to think and act beyond the boundaries of traditional engineering and deliver sustainable, creative solutions to complex technical problems.
From July, these terms will commence every six weeks, so international students can begin studying online now and be ready to join us on campus once borders reopen.
You'll learn:
Sustainable infrastructure
Gain grounding in the design and production of renewable energy systems.
Civil construction
Understand civil engineering from a design, practical and project management perspective.
Water resources
Water engineering is an essential component of civil engineering. Learn about fluid dynamics, hydraulic systems, hydrological cycles, water quality, water management and water treatment.
Transport engineering
Analyse and design multimodal transport facilities, road and pavement structures.
Surveying
Take measurements of the earth's surface and perform calculations to produce maps and drawings for civil engineering design and construction.
Computer aided design
Use computers and software to design, improve and assess civil engineering projects.
The qualification awarded on graduation is recognized in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 8.
Career Outcomes
As a civil engineering graduate, you'll be well placed to pursue roles that include:
Structural engineer
Scope, survey, design and develop residential, industrial, commercial and public projects in building and infrastructure.
Liaise with clients and stakeholders, work in teams, write technical reports and follow projects through to completion.
Water and wastewater engineer
Design projects involving provision of potable water, disposal of wastewater and sewage, or prevention of flood-related damages.
Transport engineer
Plan, design, operate, and manage transport systems to provide for the safe, efficient, comfortable, reliable, and environmental friendly movements of people and goods.
Geotechnical engineer
Perform geotechnical studies and investigations to evaluate construction site conditions and design the suitable geo-structures.
Renewable energy engineer
Conduct feasibility studies, tender projects and work to budget.
Analyse data, refine design and implement project plans to deliver renewable energy solutions.
Project estimator
Assess project scope and make recommendations for improving delivery.
Manage stakeholders through clear lines of communication, provide technical guidance and contribute to the improvement of workflow and process.
Construction engineer
Oversee diverse, large scale construction projects that may include housing, roads, building sites and sewerage systems.
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) is accredited by Engineers Australia (EA). Professional membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree.
