Politics affects us all. It is about the ability to change lives, the big ideas that shape our social, economic and political worlds, and how these ideas become policies. It is about how we are governed, about politicians, parties, elections and governments, but, perhaps more importantly, it is also about the relationship between each one of us as individuals and as members of society, communities, and organisations. Politics at Aberystwyth seeks to understand the institutions and practice of politics as well as the ideas and concepts that make up the big political issues of our time and shape our daily lives: ideas of justice, freedom, power, citizenship, democracy, and the morality of political decision-making.
Overview
Why study Politics at Aberystwyth?
- You will become a student in the world’s first department of international politics, founded in 1919 after the end of World War I to help the world understand the world.
- In the latest National Student Survey, we are ranked top 10 in the UK for the subject area of Politics (NSS, 2017) and research excellence (REF 2014).
- You will be taught and mentored by lecturers who are enthusiastic, committed in providing you with an outstanding and dynamic learning environment.
- All students in our department will have the opportunity to take part in our prestigious Parliamentary Placement scheme alongside an MP (House of Commons, Westminster) or an AM (Welsh Assembly, Cardiff).
- During your course, the department organises an event where you can participate in our renowned ‘Crisis Games’; a three day role playing exercise in political, economic and diplomatic manoeuvre, developing negotiation and communication, critical thinking, team work, and problem-solving skills.
- If you enjoy writing but want to develop your political journalist skills, then the oldest student–run international Politics journal in the UK ‘Interstate' which is based within the department will be a worthwhile and fulfilling extra curricular activity.
