The Master of Arts in Latin American and Caribbean Studies (MALACS) is a unique interdisciplinary program that allows students to design their program based on their own research and career interests. The Program is particularly valuable to those students whose research and professional interests cannot be accommodated within a single discipline. The program stresses a close faculty-student advising relationship. MALACS students study the religious, political, economic, social and cultural processes shaping Latin America and the Caribbean and emerge from the program with the expertise required to become leaders in a variety of fields, including education, government, non-government, business, and human and social services, among others. Areas of focus include, but are not limited to, comparative politics, comparative sociology, Cuban studies, cultural studies, economics, environmental studies, foreign policy and security studies, Haitian studies, Hispanic literature, history, international business, international development, international relations, and modern languages. Full-time students typically complete the program in two years, although it is possible to complete it in one and a half years.

Students may choose courses taught by more than 120 interdisciplinary faculty associates from various departments and across colleges and schools at FIU.
- Areas of expertise include Global & Sociocultural Studies; History; Law; Literature; Politics and International Relations; African and African Diaspora Studies; Architecture; Art and Art History; Biological Sciences; Business Administration; Criminal Justice; Earth and Environment; Economics; Education; Engineering; Fine Arts; Hospitality; Journalism and Mass Communication; Public Administration; Public Health, and Religious Studies, as well as French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Spanish.
- Students may enroll in joint Master’s degree programs in International Business or Law, saving both time and money. Students have access to FIU’s extensive Latin American and Caribbean library holdings and resources including FIU Special Collections, the Diaz Ayala Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection, and the Digital Library of the Caribbean.
- Alumni are employed in a variety of public and private industries in the U.S. and abroad. They currently serve as research directors, teachers, NGO administrators, diplomatic representatives, policy-makers, and small business owners. Many alumni of the program have also gone on to pursue PhDs and many have excelled in careers in higher education.
